About Scott

Hey! I'm Scott

Hi and welcome…I’m Scott McCarthy, a creative with a passion for storytelling in all its forms, whether through music, on screen, or the written word.

I’m a support actor, vocalist, and now an author, having recently released my debut novel, The Miseries – Book 1: The Hanging Tree, the first book in a planned trilogy, I also created The Doodles from Planet Doodle, a colourful universe of quirky characters and playful adventures.

My journey began with music. I’ve spent over 38 years as a professional singer and entertainer, starting my career as a young Butlins Redcoat in the 1980s. Since then, I’ve performed across the world, developing my craft as a solo singer and entertainer. One of my proudest achievements is The Forever Diamond Show, my tribute to Neil Diamond, which has entertained audiences throughout the UK. Check out my media page for my vocal work.

Over the years, I’ve also directed stage amateur stage productions like The Buddy Holly Story and stepped into leading roles on stage, including taking lead in the stage adaptation of The Full Monty. My love for performing naturally evolved into writing, allowing me to explore new creative worlds and bring fresh stories to life.

In 2023, I expanded into screen work, training as a SPACT (Special Action) Support Actor. I gained skills in sword fighting, martial arts, and horse riding, archery, skills I put to use in House of the Dragon Season 2 and 3, where I appeared as a Guard of the Red Keep and as part of a four-man ballista crossbow team. My additional support acting credits include The Witcher (Season 5), Geek Girls (Season 2), various commercial roles and my lates role as a member of clan Macleod in the remake of Highlander.

My first journey into writing was a children’s book the first in a series of 6, that book is The First Pan Doodle. In this series I introduce Pan Doodle, a four-armed, stalk-eyed, lovable ball of colour from another universe, on his first big adventure with his friends. Due to my adult theme books I write the children’s series under a pen name ‘PD Oodles’.

The Early Years

I grew up in a small little village in the 1970s and 80s, the youngest of eight children. Life back then was very different, cobbled streets, rag-and-bone men with horse and cart, black-and-white televisions, record players spinning Northern Soul, punk rock, and rock & roll, this was the backdrop of my youth. We didn’t have much money, but we didn’t really think about it. We had imagination, freedom, and each other.

With five sisters and two brothers, hand-me-downs were just part of life, though I drew the line at pencil skirts. If we wanted bikes, we built them. If we wanted go-karts, we made them from scraps found at the local tip. There were no phones, computers, or social media, just long days outdoors creating adventures from nothing. Looking back now, those simple times gave me the greatest gift of all: a vivid imagination.

I was always a dreamer and a bit of a wanderer. I never really followed the crowd and often found myself getting into mischief or chasing adventures that existed mostly in my own head. School was difficult for me. Today, I would probably have been diagnosed with ADHD or dyslexia, but back then you were simply told to “try harder.” The frustrating part was that my head was full of stories I desperately wanted to tell, but I struggled to find the words or confidence to put them down on paper.

Home was loving in its own quiet way. We weren’t a family of hugs or deep conversations, but there was strength, resilience, and an understanding that everyone just got on with things. Like many children of that generation, I was a latchkey kid who learned independence early.

As a boy, I dreamed big. One week I wanted to plan the crime of the century like something out of a movie, or be an assassin for higher to protect my country, the next I wanted to become a PE teacher because I loved sport and gymnastics. But deep down, I think I was always meant to live creatively and chase stories wherever they led me.

After a short time in the Parachute Regiment, which ended due to injury, life unexpectedly took me into entertainment. I returned to work as a lifeguard at Butlin’s Skegness and soon became a Butlins Redcoat. From there, I spent many years performing as a singer, entertainer, and all-round showman. Performing gave me confidence and allowed me to step into worlds far bigger than the little village I came from.

In recent years, I returned to acting work as a support actor, concentrating on ‘Special Action’ roles and I am loving every moment of it, whether wearing armour and carrying a sword, fighting dragons, or standing in the Highlands of Scotland battling immortals. Even now, life still feels like an adventure.

Becoming an author later in life now feels like everything has come full circle. All those years of dreaming, wandering, performing, and imagining stories finally found a home on the page. I may have started late, but I still have many stories left to tell, and I’m grateful every day that I finally found my voice.
